The .CO TLD is being made available by .CO Internet S.A.S (.CO Internet), a strategic venture formed between Arcelandia S.A. and Neustar, Inc. (NYSE: NSR) to administer, manage and promote the .CO TLD. Arcelandia is an entity with interests in a variety of Internet-related businesses; and Neustar is a leading provider of global registry and managed DNS services for top-level domains.
.CO Internet was appointed as the manager for the .CO TLD through a public procurement process in the Republic of Colombia that took place in early 2009. The concession contract, which is dated September 3rd, 2009, is for an initial term of ten years. .CO Internet received the re-delegation approval as the manager of the .CO TLD by ICANN on December 9th, 2009, and received formal confirmation of the request by the United States Department of Commerce on December 23rd, 2009.
This agreement has allowed the global launch of second level domain names such as xyz.co, creating immediate market potential around the world. .CO domains offer people and companies more choice in branding their online presence with a truly global, recognizable and credible domain name.
The launch of .CO second level domains involved a multi-phase launch plan to ensure for the stable and orderly distribution of domains. The plan commenced with the grandfathering of existing third-level names; then moved to a structured Trademark Sunrise Period, a Landrush Period and finally, General Availability. General Availability took place on July 20, 2010 with record setting statistics.
To ensure that .CO’s operational vision is realized in harmony with the global domain name system, all policy matters relating to the administration will be overseen by an Advisory Committee comprised of key appointed international, government, and business representatives.
